John )James?) Herries (commonly Gordon)

Born c. 1716, the son of John Herries of Auchencheen, near Moniaive in Galloway, and Elizabeth Gordon; a brother of no. 61; to Scots College, Douai, 12th August 1731; to Scots College, Madrid (date of arrival unknown); after a short time, left Madrid, 11th October 1734; returned to Scots College, Douai, 5th December 1734 (Grammar); later, joined the army and became a lieutenant.
